Fosfomycin is an antibiotic that kills the bacteria causing certain urinary tract infections, such as bladder infections.

It only works against bacteria. It will not help colds, flu or other viral infections.

Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you. It is usually taken as one single dose.

• Never take the granules dry. Empty the whole sachet into a glass of cold water (not hot), stir until dissolved and drink it straight away.
• You can take it with or without food.
• Do not share it with anyone else.
• Contact your doctor if your symptoms have not improved within 2 to 3 days, or if they come back after treatment.

Common side effects include:

• feeling sick
• diarrhoea
• headache
• vaginal itching

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• rash, hives or itching, or swelling of the face, lips or tongue
• difficulty breathing
• watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps or fever, even weeks after taking it

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• have had an allergic reaction to fosfomycin or any other medicine
• have kidney or liver disease
• have asthma
• are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding

Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all other medicines, vitamins and herbal products you take.

Keep in the original container, tightly closed, at room temperature away from heat and moisture (not in a bathroom), and out of the reach of children.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding before you take fosfomycin.

Diarrhoea: severe or watery diarrhoea after antibiotics needs medical advice; do not treat it yourself without checking first.
