Empozin Tablet 10mg Tablets

Empagliflozin helps your kidneys remove extra sugar from your body through your pee. It belongs to a group of medicines called SGLT2 inhibitors.

It is used to:

• treat type 2 diabetes, on its own or with other diabetes medicines, alongside diet and exercise
• treat heart failure, by easing the work of the heart and lowering the chance of it getting weaker
• help slow the worsening of chronic kidney disease

It is not used for type 1 diabetes.

Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, usually once a day at the same time.

• You can take it with or without food.
• Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not chew it.
• If you miss a dose and the next dose is 12 hours or more away, take it when you remember. If the next dose is sooner, skip the missed one. Never take two doses together.
• Treatment is usually long term. Do not stop without speaking to your doctor.
• If you become unwell or need surgery, your doctor may ask you to pause it until you recover.

Common side effects include:

• thrush (genital yeast infection)
• pain or burning when peeing, or peeing more than usual
• mild rash or itchy skin
• low blood sugar (a hypo) when taken with insulin or medicines like gliclazide

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• signs of diabetic ketoacidosis: feeling or being sick, stomach pain, great thirst, confusion or unusual tiredness, fruity-smelling breath, or fast deep breathing
• severe pain, redness or swelling around the genitals or back passage with fever (possible Fournier's gangrene)
• fever, back or side pain, or blood in the urine (severe urine infection)
• signs of dehydration, such as dizziness, dry mouth and peeing less
• swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• have had an allergic reaction to empagliflozin or another medicine
• have high blood sugar with ketones in your urine
• have severe kidney or liver disease, or low blood pressure
• often get urine infections
• are due to have surgery
• are 75 or older
• take water tablets (diuretics), blood pressure medicines, insulin or sulfonylureas such as gliclazide

Store as directed on the pack or leaflet, and keep out of the reach of children. Ask your pharmacist if you are unsure.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: empagliflozin is not recommended in pregnancy or usually while breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Low blood sugar: if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, carry a sugary snack or drink in case of a hypo.

Alcohol: you can drink alcohol, but it raises the risk of low blood sugar; avoid drinking on an empty stomach.

Driving: do not drive if you have hypo symptoms. Herbal products such as karela (bitter gourd) may also lower blood sugar.
