Haloperidol is an antipsychotic medicine. It is used to:

• manage psychotic disorders, such as schizophrenia
• control movement and vocal tics in Tourette's syndrome
• treat severe confusion or agitation caused by serious physical or mental illness

It helps control symptoms but does not cure the condition.

Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you. Your doctor will usually start with a low dose and adjust it slowly.

• Take it at the same times each day.
• For the liquid, measure doses carefully with the device provided.
• Keep taking it even if you feel well.
• Do not stop suddenly. Your doctor will lower the dose gradually, as stopping suddenly can cause movement problems.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next is nearly due. Never take a double dose.
• Get up slowly from lying or sitting to avoid feeling faint.

Common side effects include:

• dry mouth or extra saliva, blurred vision
• restlessness, trouble sleeping, dizziness or headache
• constipation, feeling sick, heartburn
• breast changes, missed periods or sexual problems

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• fever with stiff muscles, sweating, confusion or a fast or irregular heartbeat
• movements you cannot control in the face, mouth, tongue or body
• fits, fainting, or trouble breathing or swallowing
• yellow skin or eyes, a rash, or eye pain or vision changes
• an erection that lasts for hours

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• have Parkinson's disease (it is usually not advised)
• have heart problems, an irregular heartbeat, or a personal or family history of long QT syndrome
• have low calcium or magnesium levels
• have epilepsy, thyroid disease, bipolar disorder or breast cancer
• have had a bad reaction to a psychiatric medicine before

Many medicines interact with haloperidol. Tell your pharmacist about everything you take, and tell any surgeon or dentist that you take it.

Store at room temperature in the original, tightly closed container, away from heat and moisture (not in a bathroom). Protect the liquid from light and do not freeze. Keep out of the reach of children.

Older people with dementia: antipsychotics like haloperidol increase the risk of death in older people with dementia and are not approved to treat their behaviour problems.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Driving and alcohol: it can cause drowsiness and affect thinking and movement. Do not drive until you know how it affects you, and ask your doctor about alcohol, which can make side effects worse.
