Prednisolone is a corticosteroid (steroid) medicine that reduces swelling and inflammation and calms down an overactive immune system. It copies hormones your adrenal glands make naturally.

It is used for a wide range of conditions, such as:

• asthma and severe allergies
• rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory or autoimmune conditions
• skin and blood disorders
• some cancers, and preventing rejection after an organ transplant

It is not the same as the anabolic steroids some people misuse.

Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.

• It is usually taken once a day in the morning with breakfast. Food protects your stomach, and a morning dose is less likely to disturb sleep.
• Swallow gastro-resistant (enteric-coated) tablets whole, and avoid indigestion remedies for 2 hours before and after them.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember. If you only remember the next day, skip it. Never take a double dose.
• Do not stop suddenly if you have taken it for more than 3 weeks or at high doses. Your doctor will reduce the dose slowly to avoid withdrawal effects and flare-ups.

Common side effects include:

• weight gain and increased appetite
• indigestion
• sleep problems and restlessness
• heavy sweating
• mild mood changes

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• signs of infection, such as fever, chills, sore throat, cough or a wound that will not heal
• extreme thirst, passing more urine, confusion or fruity-smelling breath (high blood sugar)
• severe stomach or back pain, black stools, or vomiting blood
• changes in eyesight, breathlessness or swollen legs
• low mood, hallucinations, unusual thoughts or thoughts of harming yourself
• swelling of the lips, mouth or throat, or difficulty breathing

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• have an infection, an eye infection or a wound that has not healed
• have recently been near someone with chickenpox, shingles or measles
• have recently had, or are due, a vaccination (live vaccines are not suitable)
• have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart failure, epilepsy, glaucoma, osteoporosis, an underactive thyroid or liver problems
• have had a stomach ulcer
• have had mental health problems, or a close relative has

Keep in the original tightly closed container at room temperature, away from light, heat and moisture (not in the bathroom), and out of the reach of children.

Steroid card: if you take it for more than 3 weeks or at high doses, you may be given a steroid card. Show it to any doctor, dentist or nurse treating you, especially before surgery.

Infections: it makes infections more likely and can hide their signs. Avoid people with chickenpox or measles, and contact your doctor straight away if you are exposed.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: it can usually be used if needed, but talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a baby or breastfeeding.

Alcohol and driving: alcohol is usually fine. It does not normally cause drowsiness, but do not drive if your eyesight is affected.
