Calcipotriol is a form of vitamin D used to treat plaque psoriasis on the skin and scalp. Psoriasis happens when skin cells build up too quickly, causing thick, scaly patches. Calcipotriol slows down how fast these skin cells grow.

It comes as an ointment for the skin and a lotion (scalp solution) for the scalp. Some products also contain a steroid to reduce inflammation.

Use it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, usually once or twice a day.

• Apply it only to the affected patches. Do not put it on your face, as it can irritate the skin.
• Wash your hands well after applying it, so it does not spread to other areas.
• Do not use more than the maximum weekly amount in your leaflet, as too much can raise calcium levels in your blood.
• If you miss an application, use the next one when you remember. Do not use extra to make up.
• Keep away from flames and cigarettes while applying it, as the product can catch fire.

Common side effects include:

• itching, rash or redness of the skin
• burning, stinging or pain where it is applied
• psoriasis getting worse for a while

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• signs of a high calcium level: needing to pee more often, dry mouth, a metallic taste, muscle pain or weakness, or loss of appetite
• swelling of the throat or tongue, a raised itchy rash or trouble breathing (a serious allergic reaction)

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you:

• have had a reaction to calcipotriol before
• have erythrodermic (widespread red) or pustular psoriasis
• have kidney or liver problems
• have been told your calcium levels are high or low
• are having UV light treatment
• take vitamin D or calcium supplements, some diuretics such as indapamide, or digoxin

Store as directed on the pack or leaflet, and keep out of the reach of children. Ask your pharmacist if you are unsure.

Sunlight: you may need to limit sun exposure or avoid UV light treatment. Ask your doctor.

Pregnancy: it is not usually used in pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or trying to conceive.

Breastfeeding: it can sometimes be used after medical advice, but do not apply it to the breasts.

Driving: it is not expected to affect driving.
