Strontium ranelate is used to treat severe osteoporosis (thin, weak bones) in women after the menopause and in adult men who are at high risk of breaking a bone, when other osteoporosis treatments cannot be used. It slows the breakdown of old bone and helps new bone form, which lowers the risk of fractures.

It should only be started by a doctor experienced in treating osteoporosis.

Take it exactly as your doctor tells you, usually once a day.

• Take it at bedtime, at least 2 hours after food, milk, dairy products or calcium supplements, as these reduce how well it is absorbed.
• Stir the granules into a glass of water (at least 30 ml) and drink it straight away. Mix it only with water.
• If you need calcium or vitamin D supplements, do not take them at the same time.
• If you forget a dose, just take the next one at the normal time. Do not take a double dose.
• Keep taking it for as long as your doctor prescribes.

Common side effects include:

• feeling sick, diarrhoea, tummy pain, indigestion or constipation
• headache, dizziness or trouble sleeping
• itching, rash or eczema
• bone, joint or muscle pain and cramps

Stop taking it and get medical help straight away if you have:

• crushing chest pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back, sweating or breathlessness (possible heart attack)
• pain, redness or swelling in a leg, or sudden chest pain or difficulty breathing (possible blood clot)
• a rash with fever, swollen glands, or target-like spots, blisters or mouth ulcers
• swelling of the face, tongue or throat

Do not take it if you:

• have or have had a blood clot
• are bed-bound, in a wheelchair, or having or recovering from an operation
• have heart disease, a past heart attack, stroke or mini-stroke, or circulation problems in the legs
• have high blood pressure that is not controlled
• are pregnant or breastfeeding

Check with your doctor first if you have risk factors for heart disease, severe kidney disease or phenylketonuria (it contains aspartame), or take tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics.

No special storage conditions are needed. Once mixed with water, drink it straight away. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Heart and blood clots: your doctor will check your heart and circulation before and regularly during treatment.

Serious skin reactions: these are most likely in the first weeks. Stop taking it and get urgent help if a rash appears, and never take it again after a serious skin reaction. People of Asian origin may be at higher risk.
