Cinitapride is a prokinetic medicine, which means it helps the muscles of the stomach and gut move food along.

It is used together with acid-reducing medicines (proton pump inhibitors) for gastro-oesophageal reflux, and for mild to moderate problems with how the gut moves, such as feeling full or bloated after meals.

Take cinitapride exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.

• Take it about 15 minutes before meals with a glass of water.
• Do not take more than prescribed; a higher dose does not work better.
• Keep taking it for as long as your doctor says.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next dose is only a few hours away. Never take a double dose.

Possible side effects include:

• Mild sleepiness or drowsiness
• Breast enlargement or milk leaking from the breasts

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• Uncontrolled movements of the face, tongue, neck or limbs
• Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, a rash or itching

Do not take cinitapride if you have bleeding, a blockage or a tear in the stomach or gut. Check with your doctor or pharmacist first if you:

• Have ever had tardive dyskinesia (uncontrolled movements) from antipsychotic medicines
• Are older and expect to take it for a long time
• Take medicines for nervous system conditions, sleep, strong pain, Parkinson's disease, or digoxin
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding (it is best avoided)
• Are lactose intolerant (tablets may contain lactose)

It is not recommended for children and teenagers.

No special storage conditions are needed. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Long-term use, especially in older people, can cause uncontrolled movements that may appear even after stopping. Tell your doctor straight away about any unusual movements. Do not drive or use dangerous machines while taking it, and avoid alcohol, which increases drowsiness.
