Cartigen Tablets 500/400mg Tablets

Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate sodium are natural building blocks of joint cartilage. In this combination they are used to relieve symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knee, mainly in people with moderate to severe pain.

Results from research are mixed: some studies show a benefit for pain while others show little or no effect, so talk to your doctor about whether it is right for you.

Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.

• Swallow the capsules whole with plenty of liquid. You can take them before, during or after meals; after food may help if medicines upset your stomach.
• It is usually taken for several months.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember, but do not take more than the daily amount.
• Your symptoms may come back if you stop.

Common side effects include:

• Headache
• Diarrhoea, feeling sick, indigestion or wind
• An itchy rash

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• Swelling of the face, tongue or throat, or hives
• Chest pain
• Swelling of the ankles, legs or feet
• Signs of a chest or urine infection

Do not take it if you are allergic to shellfish, because glucosamine is made from shellfish. Check with your doctor or pharmacist first if you:

• Have diabetes or problems controlling blood sugar (you may need more frequent checks)
• Have kidney, liver or serious heart disease
• Take a blood thinner such as warfarin or acenocoumarol (glucosamine can increase its effect)
• Take antibiotics such as tetracycline
• Are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding (not recommended while breastfeeding)

It is not recommended for people under 18.

Store below 30°C in the original pack to protect from moisture, out of the sight and reach of children.

If you take warfarin or a similar blood thinner, your doctor may need to check your blood more often when you start or stop this medicine. If it makes you dizzy or drowsy, do not drive or use machines.
