Barimox 400mg Injection

Moxifloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that kills bacteria causing an infection. The infusion is used in adults for:

• pneumonia (lung infection) caught outside hospital
• infections of the skin and soft tissue

It is only used when the usual antibiotics cannot be used or have not worked.

A doctor or nurse gives moxifloxacin as a drip (infusion) into a vein, slowly over 60 minutes.

• Your doctor may switch you to moxifloxacin tablets once you improve.
• Complete the full course, even if you feel better after a few days.
• Do not drink alcohol during treatment.
• If you are older and have kidney problems, drink enough fluids.

Common side effects include:

• feeling or being sick, stomach ache
• headache, dizziness
• thrush (fungal infection) of the mouth or vagina

Get medical help straight away if…

• you have a serious allergic reaction or a severe, blistering or peeling rash
• you have a fast or irregular heartbeat, or faint
• you have tendon pain or swelling, or tingling, numbness or burning in hands or feet
• you have sudden severe pain in the chest, belly or back
• you have diarrhoea with blood or mucus, yellow skin or eyes, or changes in mood or thoughts of self-harm

It must not be used if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, have had tendon problems with a quinolone, have certain heart rhythm problems or low potassium or magnesium, or severe liver disease.

Tell your doctor if you:

• have diabetes, epilepsy, myasthenia gravis or mental health problems
• have an aortic aneurysm, leaking heart valves, or a family history of these
• have G6PD deficiency
• take medicines that affect heart rhythm or lower potassium

Hospital staff store the infusion bags. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Each bag is for single use only.

Rarely, fluoroquinolones cause long-lasting or permanent side effects affecting tendons, muscles, joints, nerves and mood. Moxifloxacin can make skin more sensitive to sunlight and change blood sugar. Do not drive if you feel dizzy or have vision changes.
