Isotretinoin is a medicine for severe acne that has not improved with other prescription treatments. It is usually prescribed by a skin specialist.

A course usually lasts a few months, and you will need regular check-ups and blood tests during treatment.

Take it exactly as your doctor tells you, at the same times each day.

• Take the capsules with food and swallow them whole.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next one is nearly due. Never take two doses together.
• Go to all your check-ups and blood tests.
• Never share your capsules with anyone else.

Common side effects include:

• dry or itchy skin, dry lips, rash, or skin irritation in the sun
• sore eyes, nose or throat
• muscle and joint pain
• headaches
• bruising more easily and getting more infections
• sexual problems, such as erection problems or lower sex drive

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• low mood, changes in behaviour, hallucinations, or thoughts of harming yourself
• severe tummy pain with feeling or being sick
• a fit (seizure) or shortness of breath
• swelling of the throat or tongue, an itchy raised rash or trouble breathing

It may not be suitable for you. Tell your doctor before taking it if you:

• have liver problems or high cholesterol
• are allergic to soya or peanuts
• have ever had depression, other mental health problems, or thoughts of self-harm
• take tetracycline or doxycycline, vitamin A supplements, other acne treatments, or blood thinners such as enoxaparin

During treatment, limit sun exposure, use a high-factor sunscreen, and avoid sunbeds, waxing, laser hair removal, chemical peels and harsh skin products. Avoid very intense exercise.

Store as directed on the pack or leaflet, and keep out of the reach of children. Ask your pharmacist if you are unsure.

Pregnancy: isotretinoin must never be taken during pregnancy, as it can cause miscarriage or serious birth defects. If you could become pregnant, use effective contraception from at least 1 month before treatment until at least 1 month after stopping. Do not breastfeed while taking it.

Alcohol: avoid alcohol, as it could cause liver problems.

Mental health: tell your doctor and family straight away about any change in mood.
