Uses
Ticagrelor is an antiplatelet medicine. It stops platelets (blood cells that help blood clot) from sticking together and forming clots.
It is used to lower the risk of:
- heart attack and stroke in certain people at high risk
- blood clots, including clots in a heart stent
It is often taken together with low-dose aspirin, as your doctor advises.
How to use
Take ticagrelor exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, at about the same times each day.
- You can take it with or without food.
- If you cannot swallow the tablet, it can be crushed, mixed with water and drunk straight away. Rinse the glass with more water and drink that too.
- Do not take extra aspirin or aspirin-containing products unless your doctor says so.
- If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next one at the usual time. Never take a double dose.
- Do not stop taking it without talking to your doctor. Stopping early raises the risk of heart attack, stroke or a clot in a stent.
Side effects
You will bruise and bleed more easily, and may get nosebleeds. Other common side effects include:
- shortness of breath
- dizziness
- feeling sick or diarrhoea
Call your doctor straight away if you have:
- bleeding that is heavy, unexplained or will not stop
- pink or brown pee, or red or black tarry poo
- vomit with blood or that looks like coffee grounds, or coughing up blood
- breathlessness at rest or after light activity, chest pain
- a fast, slow or irregular heartbeat, or slow or irregular breathing
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat
Precautions
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:
- have a condition that makes you bleed easily, a stomach ulcer, or have had bleeding in the stomach, gut or brain
- have had a stroke or mini-stroke, recent surgery or injury, or bowel polyps
- have an irregular heartbeat, asthma, COPD or liver disease
- may need heart bypass surgery
- take aspirin, NSAID painkillers such as ibuprofen or naproxen, other medicines that raise bleeding risk, or St John's wort
Ask your doctor before eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice.
Storage
Keep in the original container, tightly closed, at room temperature away from heat and moisture (not in the bathroom), and out of the reach of children.
Warnings
Surgery and dental work: tell any doctor or dentist that you take ticagrelor. You may be asked to stop it for some days before a procedure, but only stop if your doctor tells you to.
Pregnancy: tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy.
Breastfeeding: you should not breastfeed while taking ticagrelor.
Lab tests: tell the laboratory staff you take ticagrelor before any blood test.
