Phenzen 100mg Capsules

Phenytoin sodium is an anti-epileptic medicine that helps control many types of seizures (fits). It is also used to prevent seizures during or after brain surgery or a serious head injury.

It is sometimes used for trigeminal neuralgia, a type of sharp face pain.

Take it exactly as your doctor tells you, at the same time each day. Your doctor will check your blood levels and adjust the dose.

• You can take it before or after food. Swallow capsules whole with plenty of water.
• Shake the liquid well and measure it with an accurate device.
• Different phenytoin products do not work exactly alike. Check each refill is the same product, and talk to your doctor before switching.
• Do not stop taking it suddenly, as this can bring on seizures.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember, unless your next dose is nearly due. Never take two doses together.

Common side effects include:

• dizziness, drowsiness, unsteadiness or shaking
• feeling or being sick, constipation, headache
• taste changes
• swollen gums, extra body hair or coarser facial features with long-term use

Stop taking it and get medical help straight away if you have:

• a rash, blisters, peeling skin, mouth ulcers, or a rash with fever and swollen glands
• swelling of the face, lips or throat, or wheezing
• unusual bruising, bleeding, sore throat, fever or pale skin
• yellow skin or eyes, or upper right tummy pain
• a slow or uneven heartbeat, chest pain or fainting
• confusion or severe changes in thinking, which may mean your level is too high
• thoughts of harming yourself

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• have liver, kidney or heart disease, porphyria, or diabetes
• have thin bones or low vitamin D
• are of Chinese, Thai or other East or South-East Asian origin, as an inherited gene can raise the risk of serious skin reactions
• drink a lot of alcohol
• take other medicines, including blood thinners, other epilepsy medicines, antacids, folic acid or St John's wort
• could become pregnant, are pregnant or breastfeeding

Store below 25°C, in the original package to protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze the liquid. Keep out of the reach of children.

Pregnancy: phenytoin can cause birth defects and may affect a baby's development. Talk to your doctor before planning a pregnancy, but do not stop it on your own.

Contraception: it can make hormonal contraception less effective. Ask about other methods.

Driving: it may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Do not drive or use machines if affected.

Overdose: phenytoin is dangerous in overdose. Get urgent help.
