Multivitamins combine several of the vitamins your body needs to grow and work normally. Most people can get all the vitamins they need from a varied, balanced diet, but some people may need extra.

A doctor or pharmacist may suggest a supplement if, for example, your diet is restricted or you are vegetarian or vegan (vitamin B12), or you are planning a pregnancy (folic acid).

Take it as described on the pack or as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.

• Do not take more than the recommended amount, and avoid taking several supplements that contain the same vitamins.
• Ask your doctor or pharmacist before starting a supplement, especially if you take other medicines.

Taken as directed, multivitamins rarely cause problems. Taking too much of some vitamins, such as vitamins A and D, can be harmful.

Get medical help straight away if:

• a child swallows adult multivitamins, especially ones containing iron, even if they seem well
• someone has taken a large amount and has vomiting, diarrhoea (which may be dark or bloody) or weakness

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking a multivitamin if you:

• are pregnant or planning a pregnancy
• smoke or have worked with asbestos (avoid products with beta-carotene)
• take other medicines or supplements
• have a long-term health condition

Store as directed on the pack and keep out of the reach and sight of children.

Pregnancy: do not take supplements containing vitamin A (retinol) or fish liver oil when pregnant, as too much vitamin A can harm the baby. Choose a pregnancy multivitamin and check the label.

Children: iron overdose from adult vitamins is very dangerous for young children. Keep all supplements locked away.
