Levocetirizine is an antihistamine. It blocks histamine, a natural chemical your body releases during an allergic reaction. It is used to relieve:

• hay fever and other allergies: sneezing, runny or itchy nose, itchy throat, and red, itchy or watery eyes
• hives (urticaria) and the itch that comes with them

Take it as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, usually once a day in the evening.

• It can be taken with or without food.
• Take it at about the same time each day.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next dose is nearly due; then skip the missed one. Never take two doses together.

Common side effects include:

• sleepiness
• tiredness

Contact your doctor straight away if you have:

• a rash, hives or itching
• swelling of the hands, arms, feet, ankles or lower legs
• trouble breathing or swelling of the face or throat (get emergency help)

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• are allergic to levocetirizine, cetirizine or any other medicine
• have, or have had, kidney disease
• are pregnant or planning a pregnancy
• are breastfeeding (the source advises not to breastfeed while taking it)
• take any other medicines, vitamins or herbal products

Keep it in its original, tightly closed container at room temperature, away from heat and moisture (not in the bathroom), and out of the reach of children.

Drowsiness: it can make you sleepy. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.

Alcohol: can make drowsiness worse; ask your doctor about drinking alcohol.

After long-term use: some people get severe itching a few days after stopping. Tell your doctor if this happens.
