Dextromethorphan calms the part of the brain that triggers coughing. It gives short-term relief of cough caused by the common cold, flu and similar illnesses.

It eases the cough but does not treat the cause or help you recover faster.

Use it as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, or as the label says.

• Measure liquid doses with the cup or spoon provided, not a kitchen spoon.
• Do not take more than the label allows in 24 hours.
• If you take it regularly and miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next dose is nearly due. Never double up.
• Stop and see a doctor if the cough lasts more than 7 days, keeps coming back, or comes with fever, rash or a lasting headache.

Common side effects include:

• dizziness or light-headedness
• drowsiness
• nervousness or restlessness
• feeling sick, vomiting or stomach pain

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• a rash
• signs of taking too much: severe drowsiness, unsteadiness, changes in vision, fast heartbeat, hallucinations, trouble breathing or a fit (seizure)

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• take, or stopped in the last 2 weeks, an MAOI antidepressant (such as phenelzine or selegiline)
• smoke, or have a cough with a lot of phlegm
• have asthma, emphysema or chronic bronchitis
• are pregnant or breastfeeding
• take any other cough or cold medicines

Store at room temperature in the closed original container, away from heat and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.

Children: do not give cough and cold products containing dextromethorphan to children under 4. Use extra care in children aged 4 to 11 and never give adult products to children.

Overdose: large amounts can cause serious harm or death. Get emergency help if someone takes too much.

Drowsiness: do not drive if it makes you drowsy or dizzy.
