Vigamox 0.5% Drops

Moxifloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It treats certain infections caused by bacteria. It may also be used for plague and, when other medicines cannot be used, for infections such as tuberculosis.

It does not work for colds, flu or other viral infections. It is not used in children and teenagers under 18.

Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, usually once a day at about the same time, with or without food. Drink plenty of fluids.

• Take antacids, multivitamins, and products with iron, zinc, magnesium or aluminium, or sucralfate, well apart from moxifloxacin; ask your pharmacist about the exact timing.
• Finish the whole course, even if you feel better, unless you have a serious side effect.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless your next dose is less than 8 hours away; then skip it. Never take a double dose.

Common side effects include:

• feeling or being sick, diarrhoea
• stomach pain, constipation or heartburn

Stop taking it and contact a doctor straight away if you have:

• pain, swelling or a snapping feeling in a tendon (often the back of the ankle)
• numbness, tingling, burning pain or weakness in the arms or legs
• mood or mental changes, seizures, shaking or severe headache
• severe watery or bloody diarrhoea, even weeks after finishing
• a rash, blistering or swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing
• yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, fainting, a fast or uneven heartbeat, or sudden severe chest, stomach or back pain
• shakiness, sweating or confusion from low blood sugar

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• are over 60, take steroid medicines, or have had a kidney, heart or lung transplant (higher risk of tendon problems)
• have myasthenia gravis, epilepsy, or kidney or liver disease
• have an aortic aneurysm, Marfan or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, or high blood pressure
• have a heart rhythm problem, a long QT interval, or low potassium or magnesium
• have diabetes
• take anti-inflammatory painkillers or any other medicines
• are pregnant or breastfeeding

Keep in the original, tightly closed container at room temperature, away from heat and moisture (not in the bathroom), and out of the reach of children.

Serious side effects: fluoroquinolones can cause tendon damage, nerve damage and mental health effects that may be long-lasting. Stop and seek advice at the first sign.

Driving: it may cause dizziness. Do not drive or use machinery until you know how it affects you.

Sunlight: your skin may burn more easily. Avoid strong sun and sunbeds and use sunscreen.
