Cholecalciferol, also called colecalciferol or vitamin D3, is a natural form of vitamin D. Your liver and kidneys turn it into its active form, which helps your body take in calcium and phosphate from food and keep calcium in the body.

It is used to prevent or treat low vitamin D. Low levels can lead to rickets in children, soft bones (osteomalacia), and in older people to bone loss, muscle weakness and falls. People who spend little time outdoors, cover most of their skin, have darker skin, or are pregnant or breastfeeding are more likely to need it.

Take it as your doctor or pharmacist tells you or as the pack says. High-strength doses are only for people a doctor has prescribed them for.

• Taking capsules or tablets with your main meal can help you remember.
• Swallow capsules and standard tablets whole; chew chewable tablets; dissolve soluble tablets in water first.
• For drops or liquid, use the syringe or dropper supplied.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next one is nearly due. Never take two doses together.
• It can take weeks or months for aches and pains from low vitamin D to improve.

At normal doses, side effects are uncommon. Some people get:

• Stomach pain or feeling sick
• Headache

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• Signs of too much calcium: being sick, confusion, bone or joint pain, an irregular heartbeat, needing to pass urine often, or unusual thirst
• A high temperature with sharp pain in your side or lower back (possible kidney stones)
• Swelling anywhere in the body
• Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• Have high calcium or high vitamin D levels in your blood
• Have kidney problems or have had kidney stones
• Have sarcoidosis or calcium deposits in body tissues
• Are allergic to peanuts or soya (some products contain these oils)
• Need a halal, vegetarian or vegan product (some capsules contain gelatine)

Store as the pack directs and keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Daily low doses are generally safe, but taking too much over a long time can raise calcium levels and harm the kidneys, heart and bones. Do not take more than recommended, and keep it away from children. Your doctor may check your blood levels during high-dose treatment.
