Pantosol Injection 40mg Injection

Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It lowers the amount of acid your stomach makes.

The injection is used in adults for:

• reflux oesophagitis – inflammation of the food pipe caused by stomach acid
• stomach and duodenal ulcers
• Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other conditions where the stomach makes too much acid

It is used when a doctor decides an injection is more suitable than tablets.

A doctor or nurse gives pantoprazole as a slow injection into a vein over 2 to 15 minutes.

• You will usually be switched to tablets as soon as your doctor thinks this is suitable.
• It is not recommended for people under 18.

Side effects can include:

• pain, swelling or a clot in the vein used for the injection
• headache, dizziness
• diarrhoea, feeling sick, wind, constipation, stomach pain
• rash or itching

Get medical help straight away if…

• you have swelling of the tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or hives
• you have blistering or peeling skin, or a rash with fever and swollen glands
• your skin or eyes turn yellow
• you have fever, rash and pain when peeing or back pain (kidney inflammation)

Do not have it if you are allergic to pantoprazole or other PPIs.

Tell your doctor if you:

• have liver problems
• have osteoporosis or take steroids
• are due a chromogranin A blood test
• are pregnant or breastfeeding
• take atazanavir or other HIV medicines, methotrexate, warfarin, ketoconazole, itraconazole, erlotinib, fluvoxamine, rifampicin or St John's wort

Store below 25°C and keep the vial in its carton to protect it from light. Hospital staff will usually store and prepare it.

Pantoprazole can hide symptoms of stomach cancer. Tell your doctor at once if you have unexplained weight loss, repeated vomiting, vomit with blood, black stools, trouble swallowing, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Long-term use can lower magnesium and vitamin B12 levels.
