Ascorbic acid is vitamin C. The body needs it to make collagen, which keeps skin, blood vessels, bones, cartilage and gums healthy, and to help wounds heal. It also helps the body absorb iron from food.

Supplements are used to prevent or treat a lack of vitamin C. A severe lack causes scurvy, with signs such as bleeding gums, easy bruising, slow-healing wounds and painful joints.

Most people can get enough vitamin C from a varied diet, including citrus fruits, peppers, strawberries, broccoli and potatoes. The body cannot store it, so it is needed every day.

Take it as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, or as the label says.

• Do not take more than the recommended amount. Higher doses do not give extra benefit and can cause side effects.
• Effervescent tablets should be fully dissolved in water before drinking.
• Ask your doctor or pharmacist about the right amount if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or smoke.

At normal amounts, side effects are uncommon. Taking large amounts (more than 1,000 mg a day) can cause:

• tummy pain
• diarrhoea
• wind (flatulence)

These usually stop when you take less or stop the supplement.

Get medical advice if you have:

• pain in your side or back, or blood in your urine (possible kidney stones)
• signs of an allergic reaction, such as a rash or swelling of the face or throat

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking high doses if you:

• have had kidney stones or have kidney problems
• have hyperoxaluria (too much oxalate in your urine)
• have G6PD deficiency, as large doses can damage red blood cells
• are pregnant or breastfeeding
• take other medicines or supplements

Store as directed on the pack, away from heat and moisture, and keep out of the reach of children.

Do not take too much: taking less than 1,000 mg a day from supplements is unlikely to cause harm. Very high doses can cause stomach upset and, rarely, kidney stones.

Pregnancy: large doses are not recommended in pregnancy. Ask your doctor what amount is right for you.
