Flagyl 200mg/5ml Suspension

Metronidazole is an antibiotic (antimicrobial) that stops certain bacteria and parasites from growing. It is used for infections such as:

• bacterial vaginosis and some sexually transmitted infections
• dental abscesses and gum infections
• pelvic inflammatory disease and other infections

It does not work for colds, flu or other viral infections.

Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.

• Finish the whole course, even if you feel better. Stopping early may let the infection come back and makes antibiotic resistance more likely.
• Shake the liquid well and measure it with the spoon or syringe supplied.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless your next dose is nearly due; then skip it. Never take 2 doses together.

Common side effects include:

• feeling or being sick, diarrhoea, stomach cramps or constipation
• loss of appetite, headache, dry mouth
• a metallic taste or furry tongue

Call your doctor straight away if you have:

• numbness, tingling, burning or pain in the hands or feet
• seizures, confusion, poor coordination, dizziness or trouble speaking
• a rash, hives, blistering or peeling skin, or mouth sores
• swelling of the face or limbs
• fever, sore throat or other signs of infection

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• are allergic to metronidazole or similar medicines
• have liver, kidney or blood disease, Crohn's disease, a nervous system condition or Cockayne syndrome
• take disulfiram now or have taken it in the past 2 weeks, or take cimetidine or any other medicines, vitamins or herbal products
• are pregnant (it is generally avoided in the first 3 months) or breastfeeding

Keep in the original, tightly closed container at room temperature, away from light, heat and moisture (not in the bathroom), and out of the reach of children.

Alcohol: do not drink alcohol, or use products containing alcohol or propylene glycol, while taking metronidazole and for at least 3 days after the last dose. Together they can cause sickness, stomach cramps, headache, sweating and flushing.

Breastfeeding: it passes into breast milk. Your doctor may advise you to express and discard milk during treatment and for 48 hours after.

Studies in animals raised a concern about cancer, so use it only when prescribed.
