Daktarin Oral Gel 2% Gel

Miconazole is an antifungal that kills the fungus (including yeasts) causing an infection.

• Oral gel: treats fungal infections (thrush) of the mouth, throat and gullet in adults and children aged 4 months and over.
• Cream: treats fungal infections of the skin and nails, for example on the feet, hands, groin, trunk, scalp or outer ear. It also acts on some bacteria found with these infections.

Use it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.

• Oral gel: use after meals and hold it in the mouth for as long as possible before swallowing. For babies and young children, put small amounts at the front of the mouth, never at the back of the throat, to avoid choking. If you wear dentures, take them out at night and coat them with the gel.
• Cream: rub gently into the affected skin and the area around it with clean fingers. Wash your hands afterwards and do not share towels.
• Keep using it for about a week after the symptoms have gone (longer for nails), so the infection does not come back.
• If you miss a dose, skip it and carry on as usual. Do not use a double dose.

Possible side effects of the oral gel include dry mouth, feeling or being sick, mouth discomfort and changes in taste. The cream can occasionally cause burning, itching, redness or irritation of the skin.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you have:

• swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or hives
• severe skin reactions such as blistering, peeling or a widespread rash with fever
• if you take a blood thinner such as warfarin: unexpected bleeding or bruising, nosebleeds, blood in urine, or black tarry stools

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you:

• are allergic to miconazole or similar antifungals
• have liver problems (the oral gel must not be used)
• are giving the oral gel to a baby under 4 months old (it must not be used), or to a premature or slow-developing baby
• take warfarin or another blood thinner, phenytoin, carbamazepine, some cholesterol medicines (simvastatin, lovastatin), diabetes tablets (sulphonylureas), or medicines for heart rhythm, HIV, transplants, anxiety or sleep
• are pregnant or breastfeeding

Keep in the original packaging, out of the sight and reach of children. Do not store the oral gel above 30°C or the cream above 25°C.

Blood thinners: miconazole, especially the oral gel, can greatly increase the effect of warfarin and cause serious bleeding. The UK medicines regulator advises that people taking warfarin should not use the over-the-counter oral gel; if a doctor prescribes it, blood tests (INR) need close monitoring.

Choking: the gel is sticky, so take care in infants and young children.

Keep the cream away from your eyes; if it gets in, rinse with water straight away.
