Buscopan 10mg Tablets

Hyoscine butylbromide is an antispasmodic medicine. It relaxes the muscles in the stomach, gut and bladder, which helps ease painful cramps.

It is used to relieve:

• stomach cramps, including cramps from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
• bladder cramps
• period pain

It is a different medicine from hyoscine hydrobromide, which is used for travel sickness.

Take it as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, or as the leaflet says.

• You can take the tablets with or without food.
• Swallow tablets whole with water. Do not break, crush or chew them.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless it is nearly time for the next one. Never take two doses together.
• Do not take it for more than 2 weeks unless your doctor tells you to.
• See a doctor if your symptoms change, get worse or have not improved after 2 weeks.

Common side effects include:

• dry mouth
• constipation
• blurred vision

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• a painful red eye with loss of vision (stop taking it)
• a fast or pounding heartbeat
• difficulty passing urine
• signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the lips, mouth, throat or tongue, trouble breathing or a swollen, itchy or blistering rash

It is not suitable for everyone. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• have had an allergic reaction to it or another medicine
• have acute angle-closure glaucoma
• have a blocked or very enlarged bowel, or myasthenia gravis
• have a fast heart rate or other heart problems
• have trouble passing urine, for example from an enlarged prostate
• have an overactive thyroid, acid reflux, severe constipation or ulcerative colitis
• are 40 or over, have blood in your poo, weight loss, unusual tiredness or paleness, a high temperature, or are being sick
• take domperidone, metoclopramide, antihistamines, amitriptyline, some asthma inhalers or other IBS remedies

Store as directed on the pack or leaflet, and keep out of the reach of children. Ask your pharmacist if you are unsure.

Pregnancy: it is not often recommended because there is limited information. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Breastfeeding: it can be used occasionally or for a short time if needed, but other medicines may be better. Ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Driving: do not drive or use machines if your vision is blurred.

Children: some products are not suitable for younger children. Check the pack.
